I spent the first five years after college working as a journalist for these bizarre, prehistoric things called newspapers and magazines (it's like the Internet, but on paper). Luckily, I got to write about some of the things I care the most about — music, sports, pop culture — and a couple of things I pretended to know something about (art, film, city politics).
Gigs at papers like the San Francisco Chronicle, the SF Bay Guardian, and the Marin Independent Journal taught me how to be a grown-up adult writer, editor, and laugher off of death threats (Ed note: NEVER make fun of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, their fans are intense). The job took me from Major League locker rooms to Little League fields and from backstage at arena shows to the sweatiest, shittiest clubs in California.
As much as I loved it, when I was hired to replace an executive editor at my last job — the equivalent of replacing an ECD with a junior — I knew that the industry was facing massive problems. That's when I found advertising.
Here's a little taste of some of my favorite published pieces, and you can check out more here.
Here's me interviewing my heroes:

We talked about lanky, Eastern-European power forwards and taking over ESPN. I didn't ask him for a job, even though I kinda wanted to.

My convo with The Smiths' Johnny Marr ranks right up there with any 15 minutes I've ever spent talking to anybody. He's probably my favorite guitarist of all time.
Here's me writing about some other interesting stuff:

I've been stanning for Frank since I heard Nostalgia Ultra (Acura Integurl, specifically). I wrote about Channel Orange, as well as his live debut in SF and his momentous decision to come out late that year.

My favorite thing about this job is telling people's stories. I spent an afternoon with an 80 year-old who was preparing to run one of the most grueling races in Northern California. A truly fascinating man with an incredible story.
Print + Digital (Cover), 2011.
I know nothing about the economy, but I know a ton about music. I wanted to see if could learn something about the former by considering the latter.

I've had tickets to see the last three Morrissey shows in SF + LA. He's canceled all three. Heaven knows I had to write about it.
